HISTORY OF The Furness House, 1901 R. NEWTON BREZEE, Architect A beautiful version of the Queen Anne style by Brezee, this house was first built for a George Crippen . It was later purchased in 1920 by Charles Furness, owner of The Glens Falls Times. The date seems late for the Queen Anne style, but the long, narrow "roman brick" of the ground story and of the tower was a rare material until the later 1890's. This is Brezee's style at its best, particularly in the way that the various design forms neatly continue into each other; for example, the shingled skirt of the tower continues the line of the adjacent eaves. The Furness family owned the house for many years before selling it to Skidmore College. It served as a freshman dorm for Skidmore for 34 years, until the new campus was built in the late seventies and the buildings of the old campus were sold. For the next 17 years, the building was used as a group home. In 1992, a massive renovation took place and the grand opening of Union Gables was held on June 12th.
