Well behaved pets are welcome at Union Gables. R. NEWTON BREZEE, Architect
A beautiful version of the Queen Anne style by Brezee, this house was first built for George Crippen in 1902, and was later purchased in 1920 by Charles Furness, owner of The Glens Falls Times. The date seems late for the Queen Anne style, but the long, narrow "roman brick" of the ground story and of the tower was a rare material until the later 1890's. This is Brezee's style at its best, particularly in the way that the various design forms neatly continue into each other; for example, the shingled skirt of the tower continues the line of the adjacent eaves. The Furness family owned the house for many years before selling it to Skidmore College. It served as a freshman dorm for Skidmore for 34 years, until the new campus was built in the late seventies and the buildings of the old campus were sold. For the next 17 years, the building was used as a group home. In 1992, a renovation took place and the grand opening of Union Gables as a Bed & Breakfast was held on June 12th. In 2005, the Fox family purchased and renovated Union Gables with attention to Historic preservation and accentuated the interior decor with period antiques. Rose gardens, herb gardens, fountains and patios were added enhancing the spacious yard to allow guests a peaceful place to enjoy thier time at Union Gables. Upgrades also included wireless communications, and bathrooms and refrigerators in each room. |
